SOIL QUALITY MONITORING FOR SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE
2006
Boško Gajić | Jordan Milivojević | Nevenka Đurović
Soil and crop management practices may have impacts on the natural environment and induce changes in soil. A fundamental task of soil monitoring systems is to serve as a tool for land management in sense of sustainable development. In spite of the fact, that this task is common to all countries nowadays, there are still differences in metodologies and indicators of soil quality. Diversity of soil types may hinder identification of soil quality factors and indicators at a national scale. Assessment of soil quality is the basis for assessing sustainable soil management in this century. The objective of this paper was to identifay some soil physical, chemical and biological indicators for soil quality monitoring in sustainable agricultural management at national level. In many ways, soil quality is one measure of ecosystem health. Conserving soil quqlity means protecting the full range of ecological services high-quality soils provide.

Soil sustainability in organic agricultural production
2006
May-Roberts, S | Robertson, J | Killham, K | Paton, G | Atkinson, C | Ball, B | Davies, D H K | Rees, R | Russell, G | Stockdale, E A | Watson, C A | Walker, R | Younie, D
Traditionally, the assessment of soil sustainability and the potential impact of cultivation are based upon the application of chemical procedures. In the absence of a biological context, these measurements offer little in understanding longterm changes in soil husbandry. Detailed microcosm investigations were applied as a predictive tool for management change. The microcosms were designed with homogenised soils treated with organic amendments. Key soil functional relationships were quantified using stable isotope techniques, biochemical measurements and traditional approaches.

2006
Napel, ten, J. | Bianchi, F.J.J.A. | Bestman, M.W.P.
This paper explores the potential of utilising robust crops and livestock for improving sustainability of agriculture. Two approaches for dealing with unwanted fluctuations that may influence agricultural production, such as diseases and pests, are discussed. The prevailing approach, which we call the ‘Control Model’, is to protect crops and livestock from disturbances as much as possible, to regain balance with monitoring and intervention and to look for add-on solutions only. There are a number of problems associated with the Control Model, including reduced animal welfare, environmental pollution and low public support. An alternative approach, which we call the ‘Adaptation Model’, is based on reducing the consequences of disturbances rather than taking disturbances out

This paper analyses advantages of appliance of modern agricultural machines in agricultural production following the example of self-propelled telescopic handlers. This paper analyze new solutions of technical design of self-propelled telescopic handlers which have influence on improving working efficiency and appliance in the usage during whole year. Paper also presents new experiences in appliance of last generation of Manitou telescopic handlers in operation in PKB Corporation, Serbia.

The studies of Assessment of peri - urban agriculture and tools for safe and year - round vegetable production were done from 2002 - 2006 in Hanoi and neighbour provinces. The analysis of Hanoi impact on peri - urban agriculture was done based on the secondary data. While the production system analysis was implemented by different farmer surveys. The results showed Hanoi has suitable nature, social and economic conditions for agriculture production. However, agriculture production needs to concentrate on non - land activities as livestock, aquaculture and high - income crop. Some tools provided to sustainable agriculture production were applied and shown the modern technologies of shelter and low input use in leafy vegetables and grafted tomato gave high income to farmers, safety to the consumer, protect the environment, and can reduce the risk of disease and unfavorable weather.

The Effect of Ethanol Production on Agricultural Production in the State of Alabama
2006
Kebede, Ellene | Duffy, Patricia A. | Zabawa, Robert
This research assessed the economic effect of corn-based fuel ethanol production on agriculture and the state economy in Alabama. The results showed that in the short run a 15 million gallon per year plant will be profitable. This will have farm income and a multiplier affect in the rest of the state economy.
