From 1964 to 1966 the descent of salmon (Salmo salar) smolts was traced and their abundance estimated in the Salaca River (Latvia) discharging into the eastern part of the Gulf of Riga (Baltic Sea). The tagging allowed to follow migrations of the smolts, their mortality caused by fishing gears and the growth rate at the early period of life in the Gulf of Riga. Owing to the loss of tags the method was not suitable for calculations of the return rate. It was suggested to use the Swedish method of fastening of the tags in future. | Published | Not Known

The analysis of seasonal and yearly data on the Furcellaria fastigiata cast ashore by storm is presented. It was established that the most important area for storing of the seaweed is the shore from Liepaja (Latvia) to Nida, with the length of 50 km. The main condition of the appearance of the seaweed on the shore of the Latvian coast is the change of winds from the western to the south-eastern and southern directions. This phenomenon is characteristic for the autumn-winter months. The yield of the ready product from the air-dry F. fastigiata constitutes 30 %. | Published | Not Known

The ability of the fry of cultured salmon (Salmo salar L.) for feeding adaptations after their release into the river and their behaviour and growth dynamics were studied. The growth and feeding indices were compared with the corresponding features of the wild fish in the river. In 1964 the young-of-the-year released into the Salaca River (Latvia), in 1965 the two-year-old salmon and in 1966 the one-year-old individuals were studied. The studies allowed confirm the expediency for the release of young salmon in the smolt stage to exclude the problematic adaptation to the conditions in the river. | Published | Not Known

In 1966 and 1967 tagging of flounder Platichthys flesus trachurus (Duncker) was carried out in two localities in the Eastern Baltic - north of Ventspils and south of Ventspils (Latvia). The data on the recaptures are presented. The majority of recaptures were received in the area near the tagging place during a year after their marking. The fish tagged west of the Sorve Peninsula, was recaptured mainly at Saaremaa coasts. The flounder tagged south of Ventspils during the feeding seasons 1966-1967, performed migrations towards the Irbe Strait and returned to their marking place for the late autumn. During the investigation period a comparatively small mixing between the flounders of these two tagging areas was found.
