No significant differences in the digestibility and nutrient and mineral content between 6 varieties of winter rye were observed. A significant effect of region and year of cultivation on the yields and nutrient content in the rye forage was stated. Correlations between dry matter yield and the height of plants at the elongated stage of vegetation were significant and those ones at head emergence stage of rye development were insignificant

The present study reports the comparative nutritive value and nutrient production potential of 2 oat varieties, viz. 'OL-9' ('NP hybrid x 'Kent') and 'Kent' when fed (hay) as a ration to 8 male buffalo calves 1-2 years old. It is concluded that the new oat variety 'OL-9' is not only superior in green matter and dry-matter yield but also has higher nutrient production potential per hectare than that of the old 'Kent' variety.

Plant nutrient removal in acid sulfate soil area were studied by using 5 varieties of rice. The rice plants were harvested at the maturity from one square meter plots in each two rai. The plant part were divided into four parts : (a) filled grain (b) unfilled grain (c) upper part of stem and (d) lower part of stem. These two parts of stem supposed to be the part used for raising animal and the part that the farmer left in the field, respectively. The four parts of rice plants were analysed for the amount of nutient elements. The amount of nitrogen and phosphorus were highest in the filled grain especially in R.D. 7 and Khao Tah Haeng varieties. The accumulation of potassium, calcium, magnesium, sodium iron and manganese were found higher in the upper part than in the lower part of stem. However, all of the nutrient elements except nitrogen and phosphorus were accumulated in stem more than in grain.

Three field grasses: orchardgrass, timothy and perennial ryegrass (with 2 varieties in each species) were harvested at different dates from 19th May to 23rd June. Nutrient digestibility was determined in a feeding trial on 24 wethers of about 50 kg of body weight, fed ad libitum. The linear increase with time of dry matter yield of all grass species during spring season was stated as well as the significant diminishing of their nutrient digestibility and nutritive value. The period before grass heading stage was determined to be an optimal harvesting time

Correlation between yield and total amount of plant nutrient removal by six varieties of rice were studied. These varieties are Khao Dawk Mali, RD7, Khao Setti, Khao Tah Haeng, Leb Mae Nahng and Tapow Gaew. The amount of total nitrogen and phosphorus uptake were statistically correlated with yield in all 4 varieties except Khao Setti and Tapow Gaew. For Khao Setti yield was significantly correlated with the amount of total nitrogen uptake. Total potassium uptake was correlated with yield only in Khao Mali variety. The correlation between yield and total calcium uptake were found in Khao Dawk Mali, RD7 and Khao Tah Haeng. Yield was correlated with the amount of magnesium uptake in only Khao Dawk Mali and RD7. For trace element, total iron, manganese and sodium uptake were also calculated. There was no correlation between yield and the amount of total iron uptake in all varieties. Some vary, they have a trend to show negative correlation. Between yield and the amount of manganese removal, the correlation was found only in Khao Dawk Mali, Leb Mae Nahng and Tapow Gaew. The correlation between yield and total sodium uptake were statistically significant in Khao Dawk Mali, RD7 and Tapow Kaew.

Growth, nutrient uptake and nodulation of two legumes in relation to rhizobium strain and soil acidity [Philippines]

Two legumes, mungbean and soybean and four rhizobium strains were tested for their performance at different levels of soil acidity. The response was evaluated on the basis of growth, nitrogen and phosphorus content and uptake and nodulation. For both legumes, growth, nodulation and nutrient uptake were higher at pH 5.9 than at pH 4.35. Between mungbean varieties, Pagasa 3 performed better than Pagasa 1 in terms of growth and nodulation. Inoculation with strain M6 effected more nodulation in Pagasa 1 than Pagasa 3 and Bvr 7 performed better with Pagasa 3 as the host plant. For soybean, varietal difference was exhibited in terms of growth and nutrient concentration and uptake. Clark 63 was better than TK-5. In the more acid soil, USDA 110 was significantly better than BGm5 in terms of nodulation. Increasing exchangeable aluminum in the soil reduced growth, nodulation and nutrient concentration and uptake for both legumes. Possible amelioration of aluminum toxicity by liming and phosphorus addition were studied. Growth and nodulation response to liming and phosphorus addition were attributed to reduction in exchangeable aluminum, increase in calcium and phosphorus supply and provision for a more favorable pH for rhizobial activity

The Na-K ratio as index of salt stress in rice cultures [India]

Sixteen rices for salt tolerance in coastal soils in South Gujarat were screened. SLR51214 was the check variety. Twelve entries performed uniformly and at par with SLR51214. Grains were analyzed for nutrient content and Na:K was calculated. K content varied from 0.32 to 0.57. IR2031-729-2 had highest K and lowest Na and yielded highest. Na:K for most varieties was above 2.5. However, IR2031-729-2 had 1.19 and IET7588 had 1.90, indicating a preferential absorption of K over Na. Yield and K content were highly and positively correlated (r=0.96). The relation between yield and Na content was not significant. Na:K, however, was significantly and negatively correlated with yield (r=-0.82)
