Maize Ac/Ds controlling elements a molecular viewpoint

إنجليزي. The molecular basis of a Ds controlling element mutation at the Adh1 locus of maize is related to the genetic properties of the Ac/Ds controlling element system. The Ds mutation is due to the insertion of a short DNA sequence located in the 5' non-coding region. The sequence of this element, its effect on transcription and the production of reversion mutations by its excision are outlined. Other Ds controlling elements of maize differ substantially in their internal sequences and it is proposed that the only common property of different families of Ds elements may be the presence of a specific terminal 11 bp inverted repeat sequence. The potential of the Ac/Ds elements in gene identification and gene transfer is considered.
