The use of synthetic unwoven materials as a support in culture technique to substitute for agar gelling media in plant tissue culture was studied. Banana protocorm-like bodies (PLBs) were cultured on the nonwoven materials: polyester, SS-400, AT-400, absorbent cotton and Toyobo-Cloud, which absorbed a liquid medium. AT-400 (acetate 50 % and polyester 50 %) was the best material tested in terms of PLB growth and reusability. This culture technique should be useful for the in vitro propagation and the selection of mutants
