Evaluation and conservation of genetic resources have been major concerns at CIRAD for several years. The use of genetic markers appeared essential for the assessment of genetic diversity and other genetic studies. Isozyme markers, particularly peroxidases, have been applied to cocoa germplasm classification at the CRU (Trinidad). More recently, several groups have developed molecular markers for identification or diversity studies of cocoa. At CIRAD, a particular effort has been made since 1983 to develop and apply isozyme markers in a first step. More recently, molecular markers are being used for genetic studies of cocoa. Presents particularly the genetic and genetic diversity studies done with biochemical and molecular markers.
