Determination of nitrogen in plant leaves by handheld chlorophyllmeter
1997
Gaborcik, N. (Grassland and Mountain Agriculture Research Inst., Banska Bystrica (Slovak Republic))
In 1995 chlorophyll content in assimilation tissues of plants was determined by a handheld chlorophyllmeter SPAD-502 (Minolta, Japan). In the same samples nitrogen content was determined by a CHN-analyser (Carlo-Erba, Italy). Measurements of tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.), Citrus sp. and nettle (Urtica dioica L.) confirmed a close relationship between SPAD values and leaf nitrogen content (r = 0.866+ to 0.971++). Measurement of cocksfoot (Dactylis glomerata L.) ecotype leaves in a field experiment (Sucha Dolina, altitude 460 m) showed that SPAD values were good indicators of nitrogen status (r = 0.836+ to 0.980++). The nitrogen status of cocksfoot should be predicted by SPAD measurement. Nitrogen fertilizer application might be determined on this basis. The differences between SPAD values and nitrogen content over the growing periodi should be taken into account
