Determination of nitrogen in plant leaves by handheld chlorophyllmeter

In 1995 chlorophyll content in assimilation tissues of plants was determined by a handheld chlorophyllmeter SPAD-502 (Minolta, Japan). In the same samples nitrogen content was determined by a CHN-analyser (Carlo-Erba, Italy). Measurements of tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.), Citrus sp. and nettle (Urtica dioica L.) confirmed a close relationship between SPAD values and leaf nitrogen content (r = 0.866+ to 0.971++). Measurement of cocksfoot (Dactylis glomerata L.) ecotype leaves in a field experiment (Sucha Dolina, altitude 460 m) showed that SPAD values were good indicators of nitrogen status (r = 0.836+ to 0.980++). The nitrogen status of cocksfoot should be predicted by SPAD measurement. Nitrogen fertilizer application might be determined on this basis.
