إنجليزي. ten NSIC recommended varieties of sweet potato (UPL Sp-1, UPL Sp-2, UPL Sp-3, UPL Sp-5, PSB Sp-14, PSB Sp-17, PSB Sp-18, PSB Sp-21, NSIC Sp-23 and NSIC Sp-24) were evaluated for somatic embryogenesis and/or oragnogenesis using meristem, leaf, petiole and nodal cuttings as explants. Culture media used were MS and LS with varying concentrations of 2,4-D or 4-FA for callus induction and with different amounts of BAP, GA3 or ABA for plant regeneration. Meristem cultures of UPL Sp-5 in MS medium produced a 1:3 ratio of embryogenic to organogenic calli while meristem cultures of PSB Sp-17, NSIC Sp-23 and NSIC Sp-24 produced only organic calli. Regeneration frequencies from these varieties ranged from 0.35% (PSB Sp-17) to 25% (UPL Sp-5) of the calli produced. leaf cultures of five varieties (UPL Sp-2, UPL Sp-3, UPL Sp-5, PSB Sp-17 and NSIC Sp-23) in LS medium produced only organogenic calli ranging from 16% (UPL Sp-3) to 90% (UPL Sp-5) while leaf cult ures of NSIC Sp-23 in the same medium produced up to 30% embryogenic calli. No regenerants were, however, obtained from any of the calli from these leaf cultures.
