La necesidad de búsqueda de alimentos no convencionales de los países mas pobres, han llevado a investigadores y productores a evaluar materias primas alternativas que permitan sustituir las materias primas esenciales (cereales y soya) por fuentes alternativas para la alimentación animal. Los árboles y arbustos forrajeros, por su amplia diversidad y características de adaptación a gran cantidad de ecosistemas, ofrecen perspectivas como solución biológica, práctica y económicamente viable para la alimentación animal. Sin embargo debe tenerse en cuenta que estas fuentes no convencionales en general poseen altas concentraciones de fibra y nitrógeno ligado a las fracciones fibrosas, además de contener compuestos antinutricionales, por lo que deben emplearse con precaución en las dietas destinadas a animales monogástricos En esta revisión se recogen algunos aspectos de interés a tener en cuenta en la evaluación de recursos arbóreos así como datos de interés sobre especies con posibilidades de uso en la alimentación del cerdo.

The necessity of search of non conventional foods in developing countries has resulted in that researchers and producers evaluate alternative materials to substitute the essential raw materials (cereals and soybean meal) for the animal feeding. The trees and bushes foliage could be a biological, practical and economical solution in animal feeding. They have a wide diversity and adaptability to different ecosystems. However it should be taking into account that these non conventional sources content high fibber concentrations and nitrogen bound to the fibrous fractions. Also they contain antinutricional compound, which mean that the use of them should be used with caution in the monogastric diets. This review refers some important aspects on the arboreal resources evaluation, as well as, data about species with possibilities to be use in the pig feeding.
