A technical review suggests the hypothesis that folate or vitamin B12 deficiency (or any other cause of failure to methylate DNA and/or RNA) can activate malignancy by hypomethylation of oncogenes, and that the methylating oncogenes can inhibit malignancy by making them dormant. Specific attention is given to: the effects of folate deficiency; the role of vitamin B12; and studies on suppression testing to measure folate and vitamin B12 deficiencies in terms of slowing DNA synthesis.(wz).
