A brief review by a clinical investigator experienced in studies of various hormonal and nutritional factors involved in the genesis of coronary artery disease (CAD) responds to a published recommendation that dietary cholesterol be lowered since elevated plasma cholesterol levels elevate low-density-lipoprotein cholesterol and increase CAD risk. The reviewer attempts to clarify associations among cholesterol, lipoprotein cholesterol patterns, and CAD risk by discussing a number of relevant studies. A case is developed that there may be grave reservations concerning the recommendation that "all Americans" should eat low fat-high carbohydrate diets.(wz)
