2024
B. Rajesh Kumar
A study was conducted to assess the cost economics of brewery waste in twenty four Jersey crossbred dairy cattle for one year with three treatments viz., control (T0), brewery waste (T1) and balanced ration (T2) in farmer’s field conditions with eight animals in each group. The control, brewery and balanced ration animals were fed as per traditional and standard feeding practices. Statistical analysis revealed a significant (P<0.01) increase in the cost of concentrates (Rs. 15401.59/-) and total feed cost (Rs. 33278.93/-) for brewery waste fed dairy cattle than control animals. Also significant (P<0.05) increase in average gain of milk yield (0.73 Kgs /animal/day) was noticed for brewery waste fed animals than control. It is imperative to note that the total returns (Rs. 54653.18/-) were significantly (P<0.05) higher for brewery waste treated than control (Rs. 45393.15/-) animals. No significant (P>0.05) difference was evident in lactation days, cost and net returns per Kg of milk production using brewery waste. It can be concluded that farmers can utilize brewery waste to increase milk yield and total returns for augmenting income generation.

P. Thirunavukkarasu | R. Amutha | R. Sakthivadivu | C. Nithya
The study was structured to find out the seasonal influences on birth of piglets in tropical condition with the objective of probability in the birth of male and female piglets from 80 farrowing records for the period from 2017 to 2021. Depending on the season, male piglets are in more demand since they have to anticipate the demand for meat during festivals and other annual events. The parameters studied from farrowing records are litter size at birth and at weaning (42nd day). From this study, highest probability of male piglets were born during south west monsoon season where as the female piglets were born during winter season however, the pooled sex of piglets were born highest in winter season. It could be useful to the farmers who are in need of piglets for either meat production or breeding purpose.

2024
Narayani Yadav | Raguvaran Raja | Debabrata Mondal | Neelam Kushwaha
Babesiosisis a tick borne hemoprotozoan disease of canines and anaemia is the predominant clinical syndrome. This disease causes considerable morbidity and mortality in canines. Several factors such as leukocyte activation, vascular endothelial cell injury and release of chemical mediators lead to multi-organ failure and coagulation abnormality in complicated form of babesiosis. The assessment of these biomarkers is used as indicators of severity of disease and outcome in dogs with MODS in babesiosis. Successful treatment of babesiosis is challenging task and no drugs have been demonstrated to clear B. gibsoni (Asian genotype) infection. Newer successful treatment has shown encouraging response in cure of B. gibsoni infection which includes combination of clindamycin, metronidazole and doxycycline.

2024
R. S. Vijayaboorani | K. Jayakumar | S. Senthil Kumar | S. Sivagnanam
Six cattle presented with history and clinical signs pertaining to intestinal disorders requiring surgical intervention were subjected to left flank laparotomy. The animals were clinically examined and stabilized with fluid therapy before performing exploratory laparotomy. Left flank laparotomy was performed under Farquharson’s paravertebral nerve block in standing position. The efficacy of surgery through left flank to intestinal affections was evaluated by ease of approach, accessibility and visceral pain. It was found that caudal left flank approach allowed more ease of exteriorization of intussuscepted masses that were in jejunum, jejuno-jejunum, ileum and ileo-caecal parts of the intestine and also allowed complete exploration of the abdominal cavity. Left flank laparotomy approach with or without rumenotomy resulted in more area of exploration, prevented the proximal distended intestines to spill out and specific exteriorisation of the affected segment, by which mesenteric pain was alleviated that otherwise leads to recumbency and kicking at abdomen by the animals which could result in multiple rupture of intestines.

2024
D.C. Roy | R. Gogoi
The present study was undertaken to detect residues of Tetracycline in marketed pork using a High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) System and a UV-Vis Spectrophotometer. 300 samples of marketed pork were collected for the study. The samples after collection were preserved at -20°C. Analyses of the samples using High Performance Liquid Chromatography with UV-Vis Detector were done as per the method of Oka et al., 1985 while analyses of the same samples using UV-Vis Spectrophotometer were done as per the method of Yongnianian et al, 2010. Recovery ranged from 85-93% (HPLC) and 68-83% (Spectrophotometer). Out of the tested samples, 4 samples were detected to be positive for trace residues of tetracycline using Spectrophotometer while 6 samples were detected for tetracycline residues using HPLC method which were well below the Maximum Residue Limit (MRL) value. The method of HPLC is more sensitive than the Spectrophotometric one. Thus, the HPLC method is useful for monitoring of tetracycline residues in pork.

2024
V. Malathi | K. Revathi | S. Niranjali Devaraj
In recent years, concerns about the use of antimicrobial products in food-producing animals have focused on human food safety because foods of animal origin are sometimes identified as the vehicles of food borne disease in humans and, therefore, also vehicles of resistant food borne pathogens and resistant genetic material. The major zoonotic pathogens of concern for the development of antimicrobial resistance are Salmonella spp. and Campylobacter jejuni. A broad spectrum of antimicrobials are in use in animals One such antimicrobial is Silver, used to treat a various infections . The current wide spread and uncontrolled use of silver may result in more bacteria developing resistance, analogous to the emergence of antibiotic and biocide resistant bacteria. This could be very detrimental to many industrial and medicinal properties that depend on the microbial properties of silver. In the present study, in order to gain an insight into bacterial resistance to silver the clinical isolates of Salmonella typhimurium were plasmid cured, the antibiotic sensitivity was tested in order to find out whether the strains were drug resistant; the Plasmid cured bacterial strains were then grown in nutrient broth containing silver nitrate, in order to determine silver resistance. To identify the protein encoded by this silver resistance determinant, a whole cell lysate was made and an SDS-PAGE was carried out. Plasmid was cured .The results of the study showed that silver resistance is plasmid encoded. A low molecular weight protein found in wild strains was found missing in the plasmid cured strains and possibly could play role in silver resistance.
