The correlations among arsenic (As) accumulation in grains and straw, rates of radial oxygen loss (ROL), and porosity of roots using 25 rice cultivars were investigated based on two pot experiments: (1) soil with addition of 100 mg As kg⁻¹ for analysis of As in grains and straw, and (2) deoxygenated solution for analyzing rates of ROL and porosity of roots. The results showed that there were great differences in grain As (0.71-1.72 mg kg⁻¹) and straw As (15.6-31.7 mg kg⁻¹), rates of ROL (7.40-13.24 mmol O2 kg⁻¹ root d.w. h⁻¹), and porosity (20.91-33.08%) among the cultivars. There were significant negative correlations between As in grains or straw and ROL and porosity, and significant positive correlations between rates of ROL and porosities, respectively. Rice cultivars with high porosities tended to possess higher rates of ROL, and had higher capacities for limiting the transfer of As to aboveground tissues. Rice with high radial oxygen loss and porosity of root accumulates low As in grains.

The diffusive oxygen uptake (DOU) of sediments inhabited by Chironomus riparius and Tubifex tubifex was investigated using a planar oxygen optode device, and complemented by measurements of bioturbation activity. Additional experiments were performed within contaminated sediments to assess the impact of uranium on these processes. After 72 h, the two invertebrate species significantly increased the DOU of sediments (13-14%), and no temporal variation occurred afterwards. Within contaminated sediments, it was already 24% higher before the introduction of the organisms, suggesting that uranium modified the sediment biogeochemistry. Although the two species firstly reacted by avoidance of contaminated sediment, they finally colonized it. Their bioturbation activity was reduced but, for T. tubifex, it remained sufficient to induce a release of uranium to the water column and an increase of the DOU (53%). These results highlight the necessity of further investigations to take into account the interactions between bioturbation, microbial metabolism and pollutants. This study highlights the ecological importance of bioturbation in metal-contaminated sediments.

Chlorobenzene-contaminated groundwater was used to assess pulsed gas sparging as a minimum effort aeration strategy to enhance intrinsic natural attenuation. In contrast to existing biosparging operations, oxygen was supplied at minimum rate by reducing the gas injection frequency to 0.33 day⁻¹. Field tests in a model aquifer were conducted in a 12 m long reactor, filled with indigenous aquifer material and continuously recharged with polluted groundwater over 3 years. The closed arrangement allowed yield balances, cost accounting as well as the investigation of spatial distributions of parameters which are sensitive to the biodegradation process. Depending on the injection frequency and on the gas chosen for injection (pure oxygen or air) oxygen-deficient conditions prevailed in the aquifer. Despite the limiting availability of dissolved oxygen in the groundwater, chlorobenzene degradation under oxygen-deficient conditions proved to be more effective than under conditions with dissolved oxygen being available in high concentrations. Minimum rate gas sparging resulted in sustained biodegradation of chlorobenzene in a polluted groundwater aquifer.

This study investigated the ability of a saponin-based microbubble suspension to enhance aerobic biodegradation of phenanthrene by subsurface delivery. As the microbubble suspension flowed through a sand column pressure buildup and release was repeatedly observed, which delivered oxygen to the less permeable regions. Burkholderia cepacia RPH1, a phenanthrene-degrading bacterium, was mainly transported in a suspended form in the microbubble suspension. When three pore volumes of the microbubble suspension containing B. cepacia RPH1 was introduced into a column contaminated with phenanthrene (100 mg/kg), the oxygen content declined to 5% from an initial value of 20% within 5 days and correspondingly, 34.4% of initial phenanthrene was removed in 8 days. The addition of two further three pore volumes enhanced the biodegradation efficiency by a factor of 2.2. Our data suggest that a saponin-based microbubble suspension could be a potential carrier for enhancing the aerobic biodegradation under an oxygen-limiting environment. Microbubble suspension can enhance the phenanthrene biodegradation under an oxygen-limiting condition.

Nitrogen removal in wetlands is achieved through two pathways: (a) N cycling and (b) storage. N cycling is a permanent removal pathway. There has been an increasing interest in the development of technologies to alleviate permanent nitrogen removal limitation in constructed wetlands by ensuring prevalence of conditions enhancing N cycling. The purpose of this study is to review an emerging technology of vegetated submerged bed constructed wetland system aimed at improving nitrogen removal in wetlands through rational system design. The design and performance of this system type is evaluated. The oxygen transfer capacity and nitrogen removal mechanisms on system performance are evaluated. Constructed wetland combinations most commonly consist of vertical flow (VF) and horizontal flow (HF) beds where VF and HF are aimed at nitrification and denitrification, respectively. Nitrate nitrogen accumulation is the most limiting factor in typical VF based systems.

All commercial gasoline fuels build up deposits on the spark plugs, injectors, oxygen sensors, catalytic converter, and inside the combustion chamber, which will lower the engine's performance and increase air pollution. As a result, fuel-based detergents have been developed to prevent and remove unwanted deposits. Unfortunately, many of the detergents use high amounts of aromatic solvents, which result in a greater risk of exposure to aromatic compounds like benzene. In this study, car exhaust was analyzed for benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes (BTEX), as well as formaldehyde and acetaldehyde during engine cleaning service using different chemical cleaners. A special device was designed for sampling from car exhaust using solid phase microextraction. The extracted compounds were analyzed using a gas chromatograph with flame ionization detector. The cleaning products were rated with regard to the amount of pollutants produced during the cleaning service.

The adsorption of two taste- and odor-causing compounds, namely MIB (2-methyl isoborneol—C₁₁H₂₀O) and geosmin (C₁₂H₂₂O) on activated carbon was investigated in this study. The impact of adsorbent pore size distribution on adsorption of MIB and geosmin was evaluated through single solute and multicomponent adsorption of these compounds on three types of activated carbon fibers (ACFs) and one granular activated carbon (GAC). The ACFs (ACC-15, ACC-20, and ACC-25) with different degrees of activation had narrow pore size distributions and specific critical pore diameters whereas the GAC (F-400) had a wider pore size distribution and lesser microporosity. The effect of the presence of natural organic matter (NOM) on MIB and geosmin adsorption was also studied for both the single solute and binary systems. The Myers equation was used to evaluate the single solute isotherms as it converges to Henry's law at low coverage and also serves as an input for predicting multicomponent adsorption. The single solute adsorption isotherms fit the Myers equation well and pore size distribution significantly influenced adsorption on the ACFs and GAC. The ideal adsorbed solute theory (IAST), which is a well-established thermodynamic model for multicomponent adsorption, was used to predict the binary adsorption of MIB and geosmin. The IAST predicted well the binary adsorption on the ACFs and GAC. Binary adsorption isotherms were also conducted in the presence of oxygen (oxic) and absence of oxygen (anoxic). There were no significant differences in the binary isotherm between the oxic and anoxic conditions, indicating that adsorption was purely through physical adsorption and no oligomerization was taking place. Binary adsorptions for the four adsorbents were also conducted in the presence of humic acid to determine the effect of NOM and to compare with IAST predictions. The presence of NOM interestingly resulted in deviation from IAST behavior in case of two adsorbents, ACC-15 and F-400.

Long-term flights or the establishment of permanent bases in space provide serious challenges for life support systems. Plants are essential companion life forms for such space missions, where human habitats must mimic the cycles of life on earth to generate and recycle food, oxygen and water. Nowadays, the chemical-mechanical recycling systems used in the international space station are much more compact, less labour intensive and more reliable than plant-based systems, but these systems would be too expensive for the long-term human exploration. In order to improve living conditions for humans and plants, we need an accurate characterisation of the mass transfer phenomena related to condensation of humid air. We are interested in developing an experimental protocol, which would help us to establish a theoretical model describing the heterogeneous transfers along a wall or a plant in an air-conditioned environment. Initially, we started in dry conditions by measuring the velocity profiles within the boundary layer that develop on a horizontal or a vertical flat plate in a wind tunnel. The velocity ranged from 0.5 to 2.5 m s⁻¹. Existing coupled heat and mass transfer measurement results relevant to our applications are discussed.

The unsaturated zone of an aquifer serves as a water reservoir which discharges water and eventual pollution to the saturated zone for a relatively long period after the cessation of surface input. Effective protection of a water resource requires detailed knowledge of transport mechanisms through the unsaturated zone with regard to its protective function. The article presents the application of isotope methods in the study of groundwater transport processes in the unsaturated zone of Selniška Dobrava coarse gravel aquifer. Emphasis is given to the use of environmental isotopes as natural tracers in the study of groundwater dynamics in the unsaturated zone. The estimation of groundwater flow characteristics was based on experimental work in lysimeter. Based on long-time isotope investigations with the use of lumped parameter models, some water flow parameters (mean residence time, mean matrix flow velocity) in the unsaturated zone were calculated. The results were compared with tracing experiment results in the same lysimeter.

Wastewater contains varieties of carbonaceous and nitrogenous compounds that undergo complicated biodegradation processes in wastewater treatment plants. How these different compounds are degraded by activated sludge in aerobic conditions is still a mystery. Researchers have been trying to interpret it using the oxygen uptake rate (OUR) derived from the respirograms of respective substrates. Several models have been proposed to interpret the substrate removal mechanisms using the experimental observations. Have we succeeded in understanding the messages by activated sludge correctly using these models? In this paper, the distinctive nature of the respirograms when activated sludge is fed with different substrates and the biokinetic models that have been developed to explain the substrate removal mechanisms using derived OUR profiles are reviewed. In addition, a sensitivity study was conducted on the recently evolved simultaneous storage and growth model to investigate the influence of key parameters on OUR profiles during the biodegradation process.
