Impact of some agroecological factors on winter oilseed rape (Brassica napus L.) plant density

Winter rape (Brassica napus L.) significance among field crops is unchangeable for last decade in Latvia. Rape plant development in autumn, plant wintering and plant yielding is partly influenced by plant density. The aim of our research, started in autumn 2007 in the Research and Study farm ''Vecauce'', was to investigate the influence of agro-ecological factors (sowing date, sowing rate and fungicide (as growth regulator in autumn) application) on two type (line and F1) winter rape varieties' plant density in autumn, in spring and at harvesting. Plant density in autumn, in spring and during harvesting was determined also by meteorological parameters as air temperature and precipitation. Oilseed rape field germination was observed from 84% sown on 1st of August in 2007 till 67% sown on 1st of August in 2008. A significant impact (p is less than 0.05) of the sowing rate was noted for plant winter hardiness (in points) for variety 'Californium' in both years: 2008 and 2009. Fungicide application effect on plant survival during winter was observed for treatments with greater plants density. A very little average plant number decrease per square m during summer growth period was noted for all treatments in both years - within 1 to 4% in some cases. The tendency was observed that final plant density at harvest if greater sowing rates had been used, was never high on average for 'Californium' from 75 plants per 1 square m (120 germinable seeds per square m) to 60 plants per 1 square m (100 germinable seeds per square m) in 2009. Correlations between plant density at harvest time and seed yield were found.

Height at the centre of gravity is a part of mathematical model to interpret risk of lodging used for cereal crops. Because of the anatomical changes during vegetation period, several measured parameters in early milk stage (stem and panicle weight) will differ from over-ripe stage results in their values. The aim of this study was to define approximate values of calculated parameters describing oat (Avena sativa L.) height at the centre of gravity in early milk and over-ripe stages as well as determine connection with lodging risk. The trial was carried out at the State Stende Cereals Breeding Institute in 2013. There were 5 oat cultivars studied. At the investigated growing stages plant samples were taken from a field and in laboratory conditions stem/panicle weight and length measured. The height at the centre of gravity and gravity ratio were calculated using mathematical model by Berry (1998). Results showed that the value of the height at the centre of gravity in over-ripe stage was significantly higher (p is less than 0.01) than in early milk stage, but correlation with risk of lodging remained. Such lodging resistance describing mathematical model can be useful for oat as well as wheat cultivars.

After regaining independence the agricultural production in Estonia has undergone a drastic decline. Due to the inadequate application of fertilizers and pesticides, the yield of field crops and grasslands has decreased 1-7 % per year. The balance of nitrogen in the arable soils is negative, particularly respecting fodder crops. At present, in Estonia most of grasslands are practically not fertilized, or they are fertilized in the last order. The amount of nitrogen removed with the yield of fodder crops, cereals and potato are by 45, 20 and 17 kg ha*[-1) higher, respectively, compared with the amounts of N applied to the soil with organic and mineral fertilizers, available for those crops. The effectiveness of nitrogen fertilizers depends largely on weather conditions during the vegetation period and is the lower, the higher is soil humus content. On gleyic and gley soils, whose humus content is higher, the efficiency of nitrogen fertilizers is 2-3 times lower and the agroecological and economic fertilization risks are higher. On sown grasslands, the efficiency of nitrogen fertilizers depends not so much on soil fertility as on soil water supply, humus content and grass sward type. With proper application of fertilizers, use of suitable plant species and varieties, it is possible to increase significantly not only the yield per unit area but also its nutritive value.
