In the United States we have tremendous potential as a result of high yields and large-scale producers. The western part of the US corn belt produces more than 40% of the world’s corn and soybean. Despite problems and concerns, we expect that high yields will be maintained—even in the face of major shocks—and that our agricultural practices will have acceptable environmental effects. We know that climate change will have an impact, but, because we are resilient, there is the expectation that we will keep producing and feed ourselves. But without serious efforts to curb water use, this expectation may be wrong. And the situation in some countries in the developing world is dire. Collaboration and research are needed to overcome this.

Seventy-one percent of the earth’s surfaces are covered by oceans.Water therefore are an important habitat for the microorganisms and the other living things.A consistent microbial biodiversity is present in water from phototrophs to chemioorganotrophs. The complex relathionships between different microorganisms and the environment are often modified by organic, chemical and physic contaminations. The input of organic material can determine pathogen pollution. The presence of pathogens has to be monitored to eliminate serious problems for animal and human health. Water, in fact, can be a vehicle direct (drinking water) or indirect (irrigue water) for microbial pathogens.

L'acqua pertanto è un importante ambiente per i microrganismi, oltre che per tutti gli altri esseri viventi. Una grande varietà di tipi microbici colonizzano l'habitat acquatico, dai fototrofi ai chemiorganotrofi. Le dinamiche che si creano fra i diversi componenti microbici e l'ambiente sono spesso alterate da contaminazioni organiche, chimiche e fisiche. L'immissione di materiale organico può anche essere fonte di inquinamento di microrganismi patogeni la cui presenza va monitorata al fine di evitare seri problemi alla salute umana e animale.
