Quality evaluation of rice mutants
1986
Lahiri, B.P. | Azam, M.A. | Miah, A.J.
Eight mutants, namely Mut NS 1, Mut NS 2, Mut NS 3, Mut NS 5, Mut NS 8, Mut NS 9, Mut NS 11 Mut NS 18 and their mother variety, Nizersail along with a check variety, BR 4 were taken to analyse their quality characteristics. 1000 kernel weight (TKW), length/breadth (L/B) ratio, husking recovery percentage, amylose and protein content in seed were analysed. These mutants, except Mut NS 5, showed more protein percentage than the mother variety. However, most of the mutants, except Mut NS 2, produced higher grain yield than the mother variety. Thus it may be concluded that through mutation breeding both better nutritional quality of rice and higher grain yield may be obtained.

1986
Lee, M.S. | Kim, G.H. (Duksung Women's Coll., Seoul (Korea R.). Dept. of Food and Nutrition)
A simple spectrophotometric technique using sequential extraction of pigments was attempted to perform color evaluation of raw 'Taimuri' tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) fruits. The difference between summed absorbance of 80% acetone and chloroform extract at 480nm and 660nm reflected the maturity of raw tomato fruits. The measurement system presented was regarded as a simple and reliable method for objective color evaluation of tomato fruits. It seems possible to predict the degree of puffiness by weight per volume w/v ratio of tomato fruits during various stages of maturity

[Quality evaluation of German wheat varieties 1986]
1986

Protein quality of homemade weaning food mixtures. 1. Biological evaluation and quality
1986
Extract: In order to evaluate the actual protein value of some recommended weaning food mixtures, a series of biological determinations of protein quality were completed on fourteen different homemade weaning mixtures. The individual foods were cooked, dried and then mixed in recommended proportions resembling the original meals. Pasta, rice, bulgur and millet were used as the major components of food mixtures; egg, fish, mutton, skim milk powder, chick-peas and mung beans were used as supplementary foods. Rats of the Sprague-Dawley strain were used for the bioassays. Protein Efficiency Ration (PER), Net Protein Ratio (NPR), Net Protein Utilization (NPU), Relative Protein Value (RPV) and Nitrogen Growth Index (NGI) were calculated for all fourteen food mixtures. Good agreement was obtained between the slope-ratio techniques and the classical bioassay procedures. Since the digestibility of the protein is an important component of protein quality, this was also performed on all fourteen food mixtures by in vivo and in vitro methods, and similar values were obtained by the two procedures. Finally, all mixtures, when evaluated by biological procedures, met the goals for protein quality recommended in the formulations.(author)

1986
Rozycka, B. | Wezyk, S. (Instytut Zootechniki, Krakow (Poland). Zaklad Hodowli Drobiu)
During two following years egg quality traits of hens from 7 reserved strains at Szczytno farm had been evaluated. The highly significant differences in egg quality between years and among strains were stated. The highest shell strength and thickness and the lowest egg weight was found in Zoltonozki and Polbar strains. The indices of yolk colour and yolk and protein quality were also the best for these strains
