The Effect of moderate protein or energy supplements on subsequent nutrient intake in man

A 1-week crossover study evaluating the relative effects of each of a moderate protein-free energy supplement (420 kcal/day), a protein supplement (14 g protein representing 84 kcal/day), and a placebo on protein and energy intakes revealed that, relative to the placebo, the energy supplement increased the average energy intake 273 kcal/day and the protein supplement initially increased the average protein intake by 20.5 g (which decreased to 5.9 g by the seventh day). The study results indicated that the protein supplement significantly decreased energy (carbohydrate) intakes and that the energy supplement significantly increased protein intakes.
