English. Diquat + paraquat, ammonium gluphosinate, glyphosate (for 11 consecutive years) and trimesium glyphosate (for 9 years) were compared in a vineyard at the commonly used rate, at 2/3 and at 1/3 of it. The herbicides were usually applied twice a year (in May and July), after measuring the weed development. Differences between herbicides in soil coverage and weed height were significant, but not greater than 20-25%, showing some advantages of using glyphosate and trimesium glyphosate. Limited differences due to the rates were shown. Low rates were less effective and slower to kill weeds, as compared to normal rates (especially in the case of systemic herbicides), but their mulching effect appeared to last longer, since weeds stop growing and then dry out. Glyphosate and trimesium glyphosate reduced the presence of some species such as Convolvulus arvensis and Taraxacum officinale, whereas C. arvensis increased in the plots were dipyridines were applied. In the long term, plant diversity stayed high in plots treated with herbicides
