Most of the isolated fractions from petroleum samples (southeastern part of Pannonian basin, Yugoslavia) exhibited bactericidal action against Staphylococcus aureus only after standing at room temperature. Fractions of petroleum Ki-23, that exhibited most pronounced bactericidal action, were investigated in detail by IR-spectroscopy and C-CG-MS. It was found that the laboratory aging caused oxidation and isomerization, which were also responsible for antimicrobial activity. It was suggested that 4-methylfluoren and 3-methylphenantren have antimicrobial activity and they were considered as potential antibiotic.
