The trial was set up with the aim to study effects of selenium, as an anti-oxidative element, on dynamics of growth, biological and biochemical traits of lettuce. The trial with a sand culture was set up in a plastic tunnel in spring and autumn of 1998. Lettuce was watered with modified Hogland solution with the addition of different concentrations of selenium (1 mg Se/l, 5 mg Se/l and 10 mg Se/l) in a form of Na2SeO3, depending on a treatment. Selenium was not added to a nutritive solution on which the control plants were grown.
