Garlic is characterized by its significant nutritional values and medicinal properties. This species gathers international meetings whose aim is to sum up the latest discoveries in this sphere. Centre for Vegetable Crops in Smederevska Palanka (Serbia, Yugoslavia) promotes breeding of this species. In the new programme of garlic breeding the accent is put on its chemical composition. Garlic possesses high level of dry matter contents, proteins, fats, carbohydrates, vitamin C, thiamine and vitamin B6. It is also abundant with minerals such as Mg, Zn, Mn, Cu, Mo, Se as well as some others. It also possesses a high-energy value which equals to the members of fam. Fabaceae.
