Two friable cell lines of rice suspension cultures with homogeneous cell population were selected. A cell division synchrony was induced with aphidicolin, a specific inhibitor of DNA polymerase-alpha. The number of cells doubled at each cell division. The mitotic index of the first division was about 13% the cell population. S-phase specific expression of histone H3 and PCNA (proliferating-cell nuclear antigen) genes was detected in this system
