This is the first report on callus induction and subsequent organogenesis in pechay (Brassica chinensis L. cv Black Behi). Calli initiated from embryos using MS medium containing 0.5 mg/L 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D), 0.5 mg/L 6-benzylaminopurine (BAP) and 2 percent sucrose formed green masses which regenerated shoots and roots when transferred to the regeneration medium. Shoot regeneration (20 percent) occurred on MS medium containing combinations of 0.5-1.0 mg/L zeatin and 0.1-1.0 mg/L napthaleneacetic acid (NAA) and 3 percent sucrose. On the other hand, root formation (73 percent) was obtained on medium with higher concentrations of zeatin (1.5-2.0 mg/L) in combination with 0.1 mg/L NAA. This breakthrough is of great potential as an alternative means of propagation and as an in vitro system for genetic transformation in pechay
