The influence of wilting and addition of formic acid, 3 and 5 g/kg raw material, on fermentation characteristics of silage from lucerne, red clover and orchard grass was studied. It was found that because of low content of water-soluble carbohydrate in the three kinds of raw material the silage samples without addition of formic acid had a high pH, high content of ammonia and soluble nitrogen and high content of organic acids including butyric acid. The addition of 3 g and particulary of 5 g formic acid produced silage samples with significantly lower pH, smaller quantity of organic acids without the presence of butyric acid.
