A preliminary study on the method for in situ incubation of chitosan in the rumen of steers

To determine the incubation method of chitosan in the rumen of steers, two procedures for in situ incubation were investigated with the use of 4 Holstein steers with ruminal cannulae. Chitosan in a small bag was incubated in the rumen of steers given Italian ryegrass silage ad libitum for 12, 24, 48, 72 and 96 h with the random or orderly arrangement of the bag in a large bag. From the results, it was found that chitosan was not degraded in the rumen of steers, and the arrangement of small bags did not show a significant difference in the degradation of chitosan in the rumen
