The effect of moderate zinc deficiency on the utilization of protein from the diet was studied in model experiments on Wister rats. The diets contained 5%, 10% and 20% protein as casein and differed in their zinc content which was 0.9 mg% or 7.8 mg%. Zinc deficiency caused a reduction of diet consumption and retarded the rate of growth of the animals with a decrease of the coefficients NPU, NPR and PER at dietary protein values 10% and 20%. The apparent digestibility of casein was independent of the zinc content in the diet.
