English. The relationships between forests and biodiversity in an agricultural landscape raise two questions which are addressed from the angle of landscape ecology, and in particular bird life richness. Which forest and landscape factors influence biodiversity in a wood? What are the effects of forests on landscape biodiversity? Biodiversity in any given wood depends on factors operating at three levels: the plot, the whole wood and the woodland context; their relative importance is variable. For the first two factors, it would seem that a stratified indigenous vegetation, long revolutions and a diversity of micro-habitats containing dead wood favour a high degree of diversity. For whole-wood factors, large and compact woods display high biodiversity due to the occurrence of species which depend on the existence of a forest interior habitat. For the wood land contextual factor, location in the landscape has an influence on biodiversity evolution through arrival and extinction of species. The metapopulation theory is applied to investigate the effects of fragmentation on landscape biodiversity, often using simulation. Effects on non forest biodiversity are briefly reviewed. For biodiversity management in situations of farmland afforestation, we argue that isolation is the principal factor of biodiversity in a wood and that a gradient of fragmentation could maintain the highest degree of landscape richness.
