Analysis of the forage potential of 11 species of Acacia showed that the crude protein content of new shoots was greater than that of mature phyllodes (8-25 versus 6-12 percent dry matter respectively) and this was reflected in higher in vitro digestibility (34-59 versus 22-54 percent respectively). The most promising species acceptable to sheep were Acacia ampliceps, A. brumalis, A. cyclops and A. ligustrina. Salt-tolerant acacias may provide supplementary forage in times of drought.
