Nutritional characteristics of selected species of Acacia growing in naturally saline areas of Western Australia [and acceptability to sheep]. Short note
1991
Craig, G.F. | Bell, D.T. | Atkins, C.A. (Western Australian Univ., Nedlands. Dept. of Botany)
Analysis of the forage potential of 11 species of Acacia showed that the crude protein content of new shoots was greater than that of mature phyllodes (8-25 versus 6-12 percent dry matter respectively) and this was reflected in higher in vitro digestibility (34-59 versus 22-54 percent respectively). The most promising species acceptable to sheep were Acacia ampliceps, A. brumalis, A. cyclops and A. ligustrina. Salt-tolerant acacias may provide supplementary forage in times of drought.
