Rumen degradation kinetics of feeds measured by means of in vitro gas production

English. In vitro gas production kinetic curves of samples of lucerne hay and soybean meal were studied after the Groot's multi-phase model. Aim of the experiment was checking the reliability of the gas production technique as a laboratory tool for the estimation of the nutritive value of feeds for ruminants. The parameters computed from the curves clearly indicated that: i) both lucerne hay and soybean had a two-phase kinetic, the first one being very fast and longer for lucerne (11.4 vs. 9.4 h), even if not significantly; ii) the maximal rate in the second phase of soybean was more than twofold than that of lucerne (0.096 vs 0.041, P0.001) and was reached some 5 hours in advance (15.6 vs 20.2 h, P0.01). Such a behaviour could be explained looking at the CNCPS fractions of the two feeds. Further work is worth and needed in order to design and propose a simple nutritive value system based upon the gas production parameters. This first approach of ours seems promising

[Sono state studiate le curve della cinetica di produzione di gas in vitro relative a campioni di fieno di erba medica e di farina di soia con il modello multi-fase di Groot. Lo scopo dell'esperimento consisteva nel verificare l'affidabilita' della tecnica di produzione dei gas come strumento di laboratorio per la stima del valore nutritivo degli alimenti per i ruminanti. I parametri calcolati dalle curve indicavano che: i) tanto il fieno di medica quanto la farina di soia presentavano una cinetica bifasica, la prima piu' rapida e lunga per l'erba medica (11,4 vs 9,4 h), anche se non in misura significativa; ii) l'andamento massimale nella seconda fase della soia era piu' di due volte rispetto a quello dell'erba medica (0,096 vs 0,041, P0,001) e veniva raggiunto con un anticipo di circa 5 ore (15,6 vs 20,2 h, P0,01). Tale comportamento potrebbe essere spiegato considerando le frazioni CNCPS dei due alimenti. L'argomento merita un ulteriore lavoro allo scopo di mettere a punto e proporre un sistema semplice di valutazione del valore nutritivo basato sui parametri relativi alla produzione di gas.
