Today, the agricultural research and development consider grass roots innovations as a source of ideasand references to improve sustainably the methods of production. “Tracking innovative croppingsystems” and their evaluation, to define their economical and agri-environmental performances, imply towork on the clarification of a methodology, to which this article is going to contribute. The study is led inthe Argentine Pampa, where have been developed, since 20 years, cropping systems based on anearly-monoculture of soybean tolerant to glyphosate (Round-Up Ready) associated to direct sowing.Ecological damages linked to monocultures and increasing use of pesticides justify the interest tosearch for other methods of production. We have investigated farmers, contractors of agriculturalservices (“contratistas”) and agricultural advisers in the aim to describe a “dominant cropping system”and to identify “out of the standard systems”. 22 systems differ from the dominant cropping system, regarding their practices and productive objectives. They have been classified in 5 types of agronomiclogics, and have been evaluated. We have shown that “out of the standard” cropping systems that canborrow characteristics from old systems (tillage, link with cattle farming), but that are innovative in theway they combine these characteristics with original technical options (intercrops; integrative pestmanagement), are developed by some farmers. The evaluation of these innovative cropping systems isbased on standardized indicators, but also criteria cited by producers to evaluate their systems(economical risk, return on investment, development of weeds resistant to glyphosate). The main lessonof this work is that, even in an apparently homogeneous region, an organized track makes it possible tofind other systems, and some can prove to be very promising.
