Linum usitatissimum L. is an oilseed, which is used in food, but also as medicinal plant, in medicine and in other branches of industry. Flax seeds and flax oil contain α-linolenic acid (ALA, omega-3 fatty acid), polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), fiber, phytoestrogens, etc. Thanks to the favorable composition of flax seeds, it is a significant antioxidant, used in the prevention of cardiovascular diseases, arteriosclerosis, diabetes, cancer, arthritis, osteoporosis, autoimmune and neurological disorders. Because of the great importance and demand for flax two high-yielding varieties of flax were created at the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crop Novi Sad: NS Primus and NS Marko, with excellent technological seed quality.
