The history of enthusiasm for protein
1986
A brief historical review of protein requirements ranges from recommendations in the latter part of the 19th century for substantial protein intakes (in excess of 110 g/day for working men), to subsequent recommendations for protein requirements that were markedly lower, leading to definitive studies of protein requirements for various subgroups of the population. The balance of protein and caloric intakes for prevention of malnutrition in current thinking is discussed.(wz)
