The fatty acid content of an individual's usual diet was compared to the lipid stores of adipose tissue in humans to determine if a mathematical relationship exists. Existing data for various groups were analyzed. The adipose tissue fatty acids in men is completely replaced in about 3 years, so the analysis represents a long-term profile of dietary fat intake. This method, if applied to groups rather than individuals, can supplement dietary history reviews or provide a control for experimental nutritional surveys.
