Sin embargo, a partir del año 1948, del 40 al 50 por ciento de las descargas se han venido haciendo en los puertos mediterráneos. Galicia ha figurado tradicionalmente a la cabeza de las pesquerías de sardina en el Atlántico, siendo Vigo el puerto pesquero más netamente sardinero, lo que dio lugar al desarrollo de importantes industrias derivadas, especialmente de conservas y salazones.
