Remediation of hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)] has been widely studied for its high mobility and toxicity. As Cr(VI) migrates in natural environment, both soils and groundwater are contaminated simultaneously. In the present study, a novel reactor combining adsorption and microbial fuel cell (A-MFC) using Platanus acerifolia leaves was developed for removing Cr(VI) from groundwater and soils. When initial Cr(VI) concentration was 50 mg/L, the adsorption efficiency of A-MFC achieved 98% after 16 h. Afterwards, the leaves were used for fabricating an MFC-integrated leaching reactor. The A-MFC significantly improved the overall Cr(VI) removal efficiency through leaching and 40% of Cr(VI) in the soil column was removed. The electrical voltage and current of A-MFC reactor achieved averagely 343 mV and 141 μA to maintain the system operation without extra energy supply. This novel A-MFC reactor is an environmentally friendly technology which achieved efficient Cr(VI) removal from groundwater and soils using natural materials, proving the concept that integrated self-remediation of Cr(VI) in contaminated soil and groundwater with natural material and energy.

Agricultural soil is one of the main sink for both heavy metals and nanomaterials (NMs). Whether NMs can impact heavy metals uptake or bioaccumulation in plants is unknown. Here, cucumber plants were cultivated in a multi-heavy metals contaminated soil amended with four types of NMs (SiO2, TiO2, ZnS and MoS2) separately for four weeks. Physiological and biochemical parameters were determined to investigate the impact of NMs on plant growth. Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry was employed to determine the metal content in plants. Results showed that none of the tested NMs impacted plants biomass, but all the NMs showed different degrees of reduction in heavy metals bioaccumulation in plant roots, stems and leaves. However, four NMs showed different degrees of reduction in macro and micro nutrients uptake. MoS2 decreased the bioaccumulation of heavy metals (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Al, Ti and Pb) for 36.4–60.6% and nutrients (Mg, Fe, K, Si and Mn) for 40.1%–50.1% in roots. Exposure to MoS2 NMs also significantly increased 23.4% of Si in leaves, 205.6% and 83.9% of Mo in roots and stems, respectively. In general, the results of this study showed promising potential for NMs to reduce uptake of heavy metals in crop plants, especially MoS2 NMs. However, the negative impacts of perturbing nutrients uptake should be paid attention as well.

Development of low-cost cathode materials for Plant-Sediment Microbial Fuel Cells (P-SMFCs) has gained increasing interest, due to improved performance levels in terms of power and pollutant removal. A novel low cost three-dimensional cathode prepared by simple three-step strategy with growth of Co₃O₄ in-situ biofilm was successfully prepared. Different cathodes were applied to the six parallel P-SMFCs systems (reactor: R1-R6), such as graphite felt (GF), Pt/C, GF@Co₃O₄ (non-bonding Co₃O₄ nanowires on GF), GF@SG-Co₃O₄ (using argon as shielding gas (SG)). Its performances (R1, R2: control groups) were evaluated by electricity generation and Cr(VI) reduction at initial cadmium concentrations (4.97, 10.29 and 21.16 mg L⁻¹). A significant Cr(VI) removal efficiency of 99.76%, maximum power density of 75.12 ± 2.90 mW m⁻² and Cr(VI) adsorption capacity of 1.67 mg g⁻¹ were obtained at initial Cr(VI) concentration of 21.16 mg L⁻¹ with non-bonding GF@Co₃O₄ and bio-GF@SG-Co₃O₄ as cathodes. This indicated that these two materials were better than others (GF, Pt/C and GF@Co₃O₄) as cathodes. Characterization analysis including scanning electron microscope (SEM), cyclic voltammetry (CV), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), Polarization curve, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) showed that high current generation Cr(VI) removal mainly attributed to transportation of plants, adsorption of bio-cathode, formation of a relatively high concentration region and abundant oxygen vacancies of GF@SG-Co₃O₄. The results show that P-SMFCs with GF@SG-Co₃O₄ cathode may be a potentially novel approach for remediating Cr(VI) contaminated waster or soil.

Incineration has overtaken landfilling as the most important option for disposal of the increasing volumes of municipal solid waste (MSW) generated in China. Accordingly, disposal of the incineration fly ash, which is enriched with a range of heavy metals, has become a key challenge for the industry. This review analyzes the temporal and spatial trends in the distributions of As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn, and Hg in MSW incineration fly ash between 2003 and 2017, and estimates the inventories of heavy metals associated with the fly ash and the average levels of heavy metals in Chinese MSW based on their mass flow during MSW incineration. It was estimated that MSW incinerators in China released approximately 1.12 × 10², 2.96 × 10³, 1.82 × 10², 3.64 × 10⁴, 1.00 × 10², 7.32 × 10³, 2.42 × 10², and 1.47 × 10¹ tonnes of Cd, Pb, Cr, Zn, Ni, Cu, As, and Hg, respectively, with the fly ash in 2016. Due to the much greater fly ash generation rate, the incinerators based on circulating fluidized bed combustor (CFBC) technology released more heavy metals during incineration of MSW compared to those based on grate furnace combustor (GFC) technology. Results of mass-flow modeling indicate that the geometric mean contents of Cd, Pb, Cr, Zn, Ni, Cu, As, and Hg in Chinese MSW were 3.0, 109, 101, 877, 34, 241, 21, and 1.7 mg/kg, respectively, which are comparable to those in the MSW from other countries. To protect the environment from the significant potential ecological risk posed by heavy metals in the mismanaged fly ash, strict regulation enforcement and compliance monitoring are necessary to reduce the heavy metal pollution brought by improper disposal of MSW incineration fly ash, and more research and development efforts on advanced technologies for stabilization of heavy metals in fly ash and its environmentally sound reuse can help mitigate its environmental risk.

Hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) reduction by Geobacter sulfurreducens PCA was evaluated in batch experiments, and the form and amounts of intracellular and extra-cellular Cr(VI) reduction products were determined over time. The first-order Cr(VI) reduction rate per unit mass of cells was consistent for different initial cell concentrations, and approximately equal to (2.065 ± 0.389) x 10−9 mL CFU−1 h−1. A portion of the reduced Cr(VI) products precipitated on Geobacter cell walls as Cr(III) and was bound via carboxylate functional groups, a portion accumulated inside Geobacter cells, and another portion existed as soluble Cr(III) or organo-Cr(III) released to solution. A mass balance analysis of total chromium in aqueous media, on cell walls, and inside cells was determined as a function of time, and with different initial cell concentrations. Mass balances were between 92% and 98%, and indicated Cr(VI) reduction products accumulate more on cell walls and inside cells with time and with increasing initial cell concentration, as opposed to particulates in aqueous solution. Reduced Cr(VI) products both in solution and on cell surfaces appear to form organo-Cr(III) complexes, and our results suggest that such complexes are more stable to reoxidation than aqueous Cr(III) or Cr(OH)3. Chromium inside cells is also likely more stable to reoxidation, both because it can form organic complexes, and it is separated by the cell membrane from solution conditions. Hence, Cr(VI) reduction products in groundwater during bioremediation may become more stable against re-oxidation, and may pose a lower risk to human health, over time and with greater initial biomass densities.

Emission of hazardous trace elements (HTEs) from energy production is receiving much attention due to concerns about the toxicity to the ecosystem and human health. This study presented new field measurement data on the HTEs partitioning behavior and size-segregated elemental compositions of gaseous particular matter (PM) generated from a commercial circulating fluidized bed (CFB) power plant. Mineralogical and morphological characteristics of combustion ash and PM2.5 (particle diameter less than 2.5 μm) were determined by X-ray diffractometer (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM/EDS). Functional groups alteration during CFB combustion was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The presence of aliphatic hydrogen at 2910 cm−1 and 2847 cm−1 in the PM2.5 suggested that the aliphatic carbon-rich volatiles were absorbed on the fine particles with large surface area. Fine fly ash (PM2.5) occurred as irregular glass particles or/and as unburned carbon. The typical irregular particles were mainly composed of Al-Si-Ca or Al-Si-Fe phases. The enrichment behavior of HTEs was determined for the airborne size-segregated particular matter. Elemental occurrences, combustion temperature, unburnt carbon, and limestone additives during CFB combustion were critical in the transformation behavior of HTEs. The total potentially mobile pollutants that exit the CFB power plant every year were estimated as follows: 0.22 tons of Cr, 0.12 tons of Co, 0.73 tons of Ni, 0.04 tons of As, 0.07 tons of Se, 3.95 kg of Cd, and 3.34 kg of Sb.

Because most chickens are reared in intensive farms, where a range of feed additives are used routinely, concerns have been raised on the potential public health risk of chicken product consumption. This study was conducted to characterize the contents of trace metals in fresh chicken tissues (354 samples) on the food markets in Guangdong province of southern China, a major region of chicken production with heavy per capita chicken consumption, and to assess the public health risk from chronic dietary exposure to the trace metals through chicken consumption. With the exception of Cr, Ni, and Pb, the contents of trace metals were generally higher in the chicken giblets (livers, gizzards, hearts, and kidneys) compared to muscles (breasts and drumsticks). Chicken tissues from the urban markets generally contained higher levels of As, Cu, Mn, and Zn than those from the rural markets, while the contents of Pb were typically higher in the chicken muscles from the rural markets. Results of statistical analyses indicate that Cu, Zn, and As in the chicken tissues derived mainly from the feeds, which is consistent with the widespread use of Cu, Zn, and phenylarsenic compounds as feed supplements/additives in intensive poultry farming. No non-carcinogenic risk is found with the consumption of fresh chicken meat products on the food markets, while approximately 70% of the adult population in Guangzhou and 30% of those in Lianzhou have bladder and lung cancer risk above the serious or priority level (10⁻⁴), which arises from the inorganic arsenic contained in the chicken tissues. These findings indicate that the occurrence of inorganic arsenic at elevated levels in chicken tissues on the food markets in Guangdong province poses a significant public health risk, thus the use of phenylarsenic feed additives in China's poultry farming should be significantly reduced and eventually phased out.

Metal concentrations (As, Cd, Pb, Cr, Ba, Co, Ni, Cu, and Zn) in conventional and organic produce were assessed, specifically, five most-consumed vegetables from the US including potato, lettuce, tomato, carrot and onion. They were from four representative supermarkets in a college town in Florida. All vegetables contained detectable metals, while As, Cd, Pb, Cr, and Ba are toxic metals, Co, Ni, Cu, and Zn are nutrients for humans. The mean concentrations of As, Cd, Pb, Cr and Ba in five vegetables were 7.86, 9.17, 12.1, 44.8 and 410 μg/kg for organic produce, slightly lower than conventional produce at 7.29, 15.3, 17.9, 46.3 and 423 μg/kg. The mean concentrations of Co, Ni, Cu, and Zn in five vegetables were 3.86, 58.5, 632, and 2528 μg/kg for organic produce, comparable to conventional produce at 5.94, 68.2, 577, and 2354 μg/kg. For toxic metals, the order followed tomato < lettuce < onion < carrot < potato, with root vegetables being the highest. All metals in vegetables were lower than the allowable concentrations by FAO/WHO. Health risks associated with vegetable consumption based on daily intake and non-carcinogenic risk based on hazard quotient were lower than allowable limits. For the five most-consumed vegetables in the US, metal contents in conventional produce were slightly greater than organic produce, especially for Cd and Pb.

Long-term trends of sediment compositions are important for assessing the impact of human activities on the sediment and protecting the sediment environment. In this study, based on the contents of heavy metals and the Pb isotope ratios in lake sediments, atmospheric dustfall and soil in Yixing, China, the representative heavy metals (Zn, Pb, Cr and Cd) in lake sediments from western Taihu Lake were studied. The evolution history of heavy metals in the local environment was constructed for the past 100 years. From 1892 to the 1990s, the anthropogenic fluxes of the representative heavy metals were negligible, indicating minimal anthropogenic emissions of heavy metals. Since the 1990s, anthropogenic fluxes of the representative heavy metals began to increase, concurrent with the economic growth and development in the western Taihu Lake Basin after the Chinese economic reform. The maximum flux percentage of the heavy metals in the sediments, caused by human activities, is 23.0% for Zn, 31.6% for Pb, 39.5% for Cr and 85.3% for Cd, indicating that most of the Cd comes from human activities. The Cd content in the western Taihu Lake Basin was significantly higher than that in the other areas, and the rapid development of the industry in the western Taihu Lake Basin and ceramics in Yixing led to the enrichment of heavy metals in local sediments. Since the 21st century, measures have been taken to control the pollution of heavy metals, including the increase in local government attention and the deployment of environmental monitoring technology. However, heavy metal content remains high, and the Pb content is still increasing. The ratios of Pb isotopes show that the main sources of heavy metals in the western Taihu Lake sediments, the local soil of Yixing and the atmospheric dustfall are coal combustion, leaded gasoline combustion, industrial wastewater and domestic sewage.

Ants accumulate heavy metals and respond to pollution with modification in species composition, community structure, altered behaviour and immunity. However, the levels of heavy metals in ants’ nests and explicit individual-level responses towards heavy metals have not been revealed. We found that red wood ants Formica lugubris accumulate high and correlated values of such heavy metals as Al, Cd, Co, Cu, Fe, Ni, Pb and Zn both in ants and nest material near cobalt smelter in Finland. Relative differences in metal concentrations were higher in nests than in ants. The highest values were obtained for elements such as Co (36.6), Zn (14.9), Cd (9.7), Pb (8.5), Cu (7.4), Ni (6.4), As (4.7), Cr (2.9) and Fe (2.4) in nest material, and Co (32.7), Cd (6.3), Pb (6), Fe (2.8), Ni (2.9) and Zn (2.1) in ants. In industrial and reference areas, ants have no differences in size, but differed in dry and residual body mass. In polluted areas, F. lugubris had less melanised heads, but not thoraxes. The sensitivity of cuticular colouration in red wood ants subjected to heavy metal pollution might be related to metal-binding properties of melanins. The overall results are useful for the improvement of biomonitoring techniques using ants as indicators of industrial contamination and for further discovery of novel ecotoxicological biomarkers.
