Plastic particles, which are formed from routinely used plastics and their fragments, have become a new pollutant raising widespread concern about their potential effects. Several studies have been conducted to examine their toxicity, but the effects of nano-sized plastic fragments on freshwater organisms remain largely unclear and need to be further investigated. In this study, larval tilapia were first exposed to 100 nm polystyrene nanoparticles (PS-NPs, 20 mg/L) for seven days and then returned to freshwater without PS-NPs for another seven days in order to determine the toxic effects of PS-NPs at both transcriptomic and metabolomic levels. A total of 203 significantly changed metabolites, and 2,152 differentially expressed unigenes were identified between control and PS-NP treatment groups, control and recovery groups, as well as treatment and recovery groups. Our data suggested that PS-NPs induced abnormal metabolism of glycolipids, energy, and amino acids in tilapia after short-term exposure. Additionally, PS-NPs caused disturbed signaling, as suggested by the transcriptomic results. Different transcriptomic and metabolomic levels between the treatment group and recovery group indicated a persistent impact of PS-NPs on tilapia. The presence of adhesion molecule-related differentially expressed genes (DEGs) suggested that PS-NPs might cause early inflammatory responses. Notably, the detection of chemical stimulus involved in the sensory perception of smell was the most severely impacted biological process. Our work systemically studied the ecotoxicity of nano-sized plastics in aquatic creatures at the molecular and genetic levels, serving as a basis for future investigations on the prevention and treatment of such pollutants.

Anthropogenic noise underwater is increasingly recognized as a pollutant for marine ecology, as marine life often relies on sound for orientation and communication. However, noise may not only interfere with processes mediated through sound, but also have effects across sensory modalities. To understand the mechanisms of the impact of anthropogenic sound to its full extent, we also need to study cross-sensory interference. To study this, we examined the effect of boat sound playbacks on olfactory-mediated food finding behaviour of shore crabs. We utilized opaque T-mazes with a consistent water flow from both ends towards the starting zone, while one end contained a dead food item. In this way, there were no visual or auditory cues and crabs could only find the food based on olfaction. We did not find an overall effect of boat sound on food finding success, foraging duration or walking distance. However, after excluding deviant data from one out of the six different boat stimuli, we found that crabs were faster to reach the food during boat sound playbacks. These results, with and without the deviant data, seem to contradict an earlier field study in which fewer crabs aggregated around a food source during elevated noise levels. We hypothesise that this difference could be explained by a difference in hunger level, with the current T-maze crabs being hungrier than the free-ranging crabs. Hunger level may affect the motivation to find food and the decision to avoid or take risks, but further research is needed to test this. In conclusion, we did not find unequivocal evidence for a negative impact of boat sound on the processing or use of olfactory cues. Nevertheless, the distinct pattern warrants follow up and calls for even larger replicate samples of acoustic stimuli for noise exposure experiments.

Oil sands process-affected water (OSPW) — a byproduct of the oil sands industry in Northern Alberta, Canada – is currently stored in on-site tailings ponds. The goal of the present study was to investigate the interaction of OSPW with the olfactory system and olfactory-mediated behaviours of fish upon the first encounter with OSPW. The response of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) to different concentrations (0.1, 1, and 10%) of OSPW was studied using a choice maze and electro-olfactography (EOG), respectively. The results of the present study showed that rainbow trout are capable of detecting and avoiding OSPW at a concentration as low as 0.1%. Exposure to 1% OSPW impaired (i.e. reduced sensitivity) the olfactory response of rainbow trout to alarm and food cues within 5 min or less. The results of the present study demonstrated that fish could detect and avoid minute concentrations of OSPW. However, if fish were exposed to OSPW-contaminated water and unable to escape, their olfaction would be impaired.

Chemosensory perception is crucial for fish reproduction and survival. Direct contact of olfactory neuroepithelium to the surrounding environment makes it vulnerable to contaminants in aquatic ecosystems. Copper nanoparticles (CuNPs), which are increasingly used in commercial and domestic applications due their exceptional properties, can impair fish olfactory function. However, the molecular events underlying olfactory toxicity of CuNPs are largely unexplored. Our results suggested that CuNPs were bioavailable to olfactory mucosal cells. Using RNA-seq, we compared the effect of CuNPs and copper ions (Cu²⁺) on gene transcript profiles of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) olfactory mucosa. The narrow overlap in differential gene expression between the CuNP- and Cu²⁺-exposed fish revealed that these two contaminants exert their effects through distinct mechanisms. We propose a transcript-based conceptual model that shows that olfactory signal transduction, calcium homeostasis, and synaptic vesicular signaling were affected by CuNPs in the olfactory sensory neurons (OSNs). Neuroregenerative pathways were also impaired by CuNPs. In contrast, Cu²⁺ did not induce toxicity pathways and rather upregulated regeneration pathways. Both Cu treatments reduced immune system pathway transcripts. However, suppression of transcripts that were associated with inflammatory signaling was only observed with CuNPs. Neither oxidative stress nor apoptosis were triggered by Cu²⁺ or CuNPs in mucosal cells. Dysregulation of transcripts that regulate function, maintenance, and reestablishment of damaged olfactory mucosa represents critical mechanisms of toxicity of CuNPs. The loss of olfaction by CuNPs may impact survival of rainbow trout and impose an ecological risk to fish populations in contaminated environments.

Copper is known to interfere with fish olfaction. Although the chemosensory detection and olfactory toxicity of copper ions (Cu²⁺) has been heavily studied in fish, the olfactory-driven detection of copper nanoparticles (CuNPs)—a rapidly emerging contaminant to aquatic systems—remains largely unknown. This study aimed to investigate the olfactory response of rainbow trout to equitoxic concentrations of CuNPs or Cu²⁺ using electro-olfactography (EOG, a neurophysiological technique) and olfactory-mediated behavioural assay. In the first experiment, the concentration of contaminants known to impair olfaction by 20% over 24 h (EOG-based 24-h IC20s of 220 and 3.5 μg/L for CuNPs and Cu²⁺, respectively) were tested as olfactory stimuli using both neurophysiological and behavioural assays. In the second experiment, to determine whether the presence of CuNPs or Cu²⁺ can affect the ability of fish to perceive a social cue (taurocholic acid (TCA)), fish were acutely exposed to one form of Cu-contaminants (approximately 15 min). Following exposure, olfactory sensitivity was measured by EOG and olfactory-mediated behaviour within a choice maze was recorded in the presence of TCA. Results of neurophysiological and behavioural experiments demonstrate that rainbow trout can detect and avoid the IC20 of CuNPs. The IC20 of Cu²⁺ was below the olfactory detection threshold of rainbow trout, as such, fish did not avoid Cu²⁺. The high sensitivity of behavioural endpoints revealed a lack of aversion response to TCA in CuNP-exposed fish, despite this change not being present utilizing EOG. The reduced response to TCA during the brief exposure to CuNPs may be a result of either olfactory fatigue or blockage of olfactory sensory neurons (OSNs) by CuNPs. The observed behavioural interference caused by CuNP exposure may indicate that CuNPs have the ability to interfere with other behaviours potentially affecting fitness and survival. Our findings also revealed the differential response of OSNs to CuNPs and Cu²⁺.

Face au developpement de l'utilisation de produits de desodorisation dits "neutralisants" ou "destructeurs" des odeurs, en pulverisation dans l'atmosphere, a l'emission ou a proximite immediate d'ouvrages responsables d'odeurs, l'INERIS (Institut national de l'environnement industriel et des risques) a procede, pour le compte du ministere de l'Amenagement du Territoire et de l'Environnement et de l'ADEME (Agence de l'environnement et de la maitrise de l'energie), a une etude visant une meilleure connaissance des performances de ces produits. Deux types de produits ont ete testes, en pulverisation ou en lavage sommaire des gaz, dans des conditions reelles d'effluents industriels, et dans des conditions de laboratoire, en determinant les efficacites de traitement olfactometriques (reduction de l'odeur) et physico-chimiques (abattement des composes responsables des odeurs) au moyen d'analyses simultanees. A l'issue de ces essais, on peut conclure que les produits de traitement des odeurs, proposes actuellement sur le marche pour desodoriser l'air vicie dans l'industrie, doivent etre utilises avec une grande prudence. En effet, la plupart des produits de pulverisation peuvent apporter un reel confort olfactif par effet de masquage (remplacement d'une mauvaise odeur par une odeur "agreable"), mais il ne faut pas en attendre, a priori, un abattement significatif des polluants presents dans l'air malodorant

Off-flavours in fish products generated from recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) are a major problem in the fish farming industry affecting the market demand and prices. A particular concern is the muddy or musty odour and taste in fish due to the presence of secondary metabolites geosmin and 2-methylisoborneol (2-MIB), produced by actinobacteria (mainly Streptomyces), myxobacteria and cyanobacteria. Off-flavours have deteriorated the quality of fish, rendering their products unfit for human consumption. The process of odour removal requires purification for several days to weeks in clean water; thus this leads to additional production costs. Geosmin and 2-MIB, detected at extremely low odour thresholds, are the most widespread off-flavour metabolites in aquaculture, entering through fish gills and accumulating in the fish adipose tissues. In this review, we aimed to determine the diversity and identity of geosmin- and 2-MIB-producing bacteria in aquaculture and provide possible strategies for their elimination.
