Calculations concerning the determination of the freezing-point depression of milk

Some formulas for the calculation of the freezing-point depression of milk and of standard solutions for calibrating cryoscopes are discussed. By using these formulas the following subjects are treated: osmolality and osmotic pressure of milk; calibration of the apparatus and comparison of the results obtained by different methods for the determination of the freezing-point depressing of milk; interpolation errors of the standards used for calibration; calculation of the true freezing-point depressions of some particular standard solutions described in the literature; derivation of formulas for the calculation of the percentage of water added to milk, taking into account the alterations of the osmotic coefficient by dilution. The results of these calculations have been checked against the experimental data wherever possible
