Evaluation of water quality of Tigris river (in Iraq)
1983
Fathallah, L.N.
The Tigris river is the leading water reserve in Iraq having a total annual flow of 38 cubic km. Qualitative analysis of water was performed along the river course which extends for nearly 1340 km. considering the use of river water for irrigation purposes. Important quality parameters of an irrigation water such as the total dissolved solids, sodium and other chemical constituents were determined monthly for one year. The sodium adsorption ratio values were calculated, also some of the other water samples were analyzed for toxic elements determination such as boron. Results indicated that the river water along its whole length is excellent for irrigation purposes, but some deterioration was observed especially in the middle and southern reaches of the river course. Variations in quality were induced mainly by the agricultural activities and the industrial and municipal activities
