The nutritive value of high yielding varieties (HYV) of rice were compared to ordinary yielding varieties (OYV) through nutrient analysis, amino acid content analysis and a metabolic experiment with rats. The protein content per 100g rice was 8.03g and 6.70g for HYV and OYV respectively. Lysine and total amino acid contents of HYV were higher than those of OYV. The body weight gain of rats fed with HYV was 24 % higher than that of OYV. The protein efficiency ratio and liver weight of rats fed with HYV were higher than those of OYV
