The government of Jordan has given a high priority on improving self sufficiency and reducing the import dependency of many agricultural products. Onion and potato imports were monopolized by the Agricultural Marketing and Processing Company (AMPCO - a government company). AMPCO was allowed to sell these two products at the set-up higher prices. This paper evaluates the effect of this policy on the production and consumption efficiencies and producers, consumers, and government gains or losses. The efficiency loss in production of onion was zero or small. The same result was found for the efficiency in consumption of potato only. For the two products, the main beneficiary was the government (i.e. AMPCO). The burden of this policy was on the consumer
