This paper outlines the nature of the World Association of Veterinary Food Hygienists (WAVFH), its functions and discusses the issues arising from its symposium held in 1989. Food safety issues arising from animal disease, pesticide and antibiotic residues and environmental pollution are discussed. Issues of consumer perceptions to these food safety factors are highlighted
