A cytological investigation of backcross and sib-pollinated generations of H. praecox x H. annuus hybrid at various stages of meiotic chromosome division was made. The analysis of BC1F2 and BC2F3 plants and the study on the effect of backcrossing on cytological stabilization substantiate the conclusion that H. praecox is very closely related to H. annuus and could be used in sunflower hybridization programmes.
