Root biomass of 7 European beech and 7 silver fir sample trees was evaluated. The investigation was carried out at the Ecological Experimental Station located in south-eastern part of Kremnicke Vrchy Mountains, Slovakia. All data were obtained by a destructive sampling method. Underground biomass was determined from the first 3 tree-classes (according to Kraft). Underground biomass was weighted fresh and dry by diameter classes. The total root biomass of European beech reached 47.68 t.ha** (-1) of dry weight. The roots with diameter over 10 cm represented about one third of the whole underground biomass. The total underground biomass of silver fir (30 % of species composition) is 15.13 t.ha** (-1). The roots with diameter over 10 cm represented 40 % of total underground biomass. The most substantial root biomass was obtained in the second tree-class (trees from main canopy level).
