Study aimed to compare the costs and returns of water chestnut production by farm sizes in Suphan Buri province and to examine the problems and obstacles of water chestnut production. Cross-section data were obtained from the interview of 84 farmers in Suphan Buri province. The analysis was classified into three categories based on the farm sizes; small scale farm of 1-5 rai (44 farmers) medium scale farm of 6-10 rai (21 farmers) and large scale farm of 12-100 rai (19 farmers), respectively. The average costs per rai of water chestnut production for small farms, medium farms and large farms were 17,153.94 baht, 14,460.16 baht and 13,633.46 baht respectively. The average returns per rai for small farms, medium farms and large farms were 26,202.92 baht, 26,419.18 baht and 26,032.72 baht respectively. Hence, the large farms had the highest average net profit per rai of 12,399.24 baht followed by the medium farms of 11,959.02 baht and the small farms of 9,048.98 baht respectively. The problems related to the water chestnut production and marketing were more or less the same. The most important problem related to the water chestnut production was the high prices of inputs such as chemical fertilizers and pesticides, while the most important problem related to the water chestnut marketing was the unstable prices of water chestnut.
