Effect of land preparation on wheat growth

This experiment was concerned with the effect of land preparation on wheat growth. It was conducted at Agricultural Research and Training Center during cool season of 1986/87. Three land preparation treatments were applied as: tillage, no tillage following burning rice straw and no-tillage without burning rice straw. For each treatment, three wheat varieties as; Sumung 1, Samung 2 and SW 29 were grown. Land preparation and wheat varieties didn't affect grain yield, number of ears per area and ear size. However, grain size differed among each variety. Although the grain yield was not significantly different, the tillage treatment was of higher yield and also of high crop growth rate (CGR; 25.23 gm/cubic meter/day). At no-tillage without burning rice straw showed higher CGR. than burning rice straw treatment. It also has higher grain yield but of no significance. SW 29 produced the highest CGR. (average 28.14 gm/cubic meter/day) in all treatment. Grain growth rate was not different among all treatment.
