Survival strategy of hiba (Thujopsis dolabrata var. hondai) against creep and glide pressure of snow: Relationships between basal bending and development of the root system

The characteristics of the snow hardiness, especially the ecology of roots on Thujopsis dolabrata S. et Z. var. hondai Makino were studied. The T/R ratio range was 7.1 -41.1. If crawling trunks, which tough the ground, are regarded as roots, the T/R ratio range drops to 1.2 - 3.9. Therefore, it is considered that crawling trunks are important for keeping balance. At first the lateral and creeping roots from the crawling trunks were rhizogenic, and the sustentacular roots were rhizogenic when the diameter at 30 cm in height (D30 H) become 6 - 7 cm. It is considered that the individual without sustentacular roots fall down and die when D30 H becomes larger than 10 cm, because of their weight and snow pressure. Furthermore, during the biomass increase, individuals with sustentacular roots became rhizogenic in all directions
