The natural abalone (Haliotis discus hannai Ino and H. discus discus Reeve) collected from 7 localities in Hokkaido, Aomori, Iwate, Miyagi, Tokushima and Nagasaki Prefectures were analyzed by isozyme gene distribution. The gene constitution of an individual local population of the abalone was compared with that of other local populations by genetic distance calculation from the allele frequencies at the 14 isozyme loci. A correlation between geographic and genetic distance among local populations was demonstrated. The genetic distance between H. discus hannai and H. discus was 0.0148+-0.0052, the value indicating the level of local race. A geographic cline of allele frequencies was observed in B and C allele at the Lap locus and in B and D allele at the Pgm-2 locus. The correlations of the allele frequencies with the geographic distance and within the minimum water temperature of the habitat were demonstrated, suggesting the possibility that the low temperature tolerance is associated with B allele at Lap and D allele at Pgm-2 locus
