Cases of actinobacillosis in a sow and a horse

A 3-year-old sow, showing anorexia and listlessness, that died on the day following normal delivery, was found to have prominent petechial hemorrhage in the spleen and kidneys, and enlarged and hemorrhagic lymph nodes. Histopathologically, septicemic bacterial emboli were prominent, and Actinobacillus equuli was isolated in pure culture from various organs and lymph nodes. A 6-year-old thoroughbred horse, showing scratching, extension of the limbs and diarrhea, died and was found to have petechial or ecchymotic hemorrhages in the lungs, heart, spleen, intestines and superficial lymph nodes. Histopathologically, hemorrhagic thrombosis were prominent in the lungs, liver, spleen and kidneys, and Actinobacillus suis was isolated from these organs in pure culture
